FOUR SIMPLE STEPS TO CLEAR MENTAL CLUTTER
As moms we are all quite familiar with the feeling of too much to do and too little time.
The mental clutter of all the to do’s, plans, worries, ‘don’t forgets’, and all those fleeting thoughts that are constantly spinning in our heads.
When these ‘internal conversations’ get too loud, our minds feel so all over the place that we actually get a lot less done, despite the fact that we feel like there is barely a minute to spare.
The challenge seems like it is the same for most moms irrespective of age or culture.
SO WHY TAKE CHARGE OF MENTAL CLUTTER?
Decluttering spaces – both mental and physical, allow you to navigate your day with a calmer mind and makes you more ‘present’, no matter where you are and what you are doing.
Better organization, also contributes to your overall well-being – leaving you feeling less fatigued and overwhelmed.
The challenge is the same for most moms – irrespective of age or culture.
TAKING CHARGE OF MENTAL CLUTTER?
- Put down all the bits of information running through your head – appointments, groceries, to-do lists, travel lists, people you need to call – ALL the little things that you don’t want to forget.
2. Prioritise tasks and bring them into your daily schedule/calendar in order to slowly (but surely) move through all the many things that need to get done.
Planning ahead and setting yourself manageable tasks will leave you with a sense of satisfaction at the end of each day. Better organization can even help you find little bits of time, to do some of the things that you have been meaning to do, but haven’t managed to find the time – like that 20-minute workout, or that call you’ve been meaning to make to an old friend.
3. Apart from the clutter created by the things you don’t want to forget, there is another kind of mental ‘chatter’ that keeps disturbing your thought process, like something that is worrying you, future plans, past hurts that you are still clinging on to, toxic relationships.
Putting these down in a journal or notes created under specific titles will help you gain perspective and approach issues from a better place.
4. Every step towards clearing physical clutter is a step towards clearing mental clutter.
A messy environment adds to mental clutter and leads to those all too familiar situations of “where are my keys?” or “Mom! I can’t find my shoes”.
The simplest solutions sometimes have the biggest impact – like keeping storage spaces decluttered and organised, and having specifc places for everyday things.
The internal conversations never fully go away, but by clearing your head you are making room for fresh new thoughts and ideas.
